Honestly, about the character layout, I'm not sure. I'm stuck between a CvS/MvC type gameplay, or something of my own (similar to the Z2 team's style but a bit different). I'm open to suggestions though. Just a thing I keep reminding myself though, is that I have little experience with code, and I'm not sure how much or how little that is going to affect the project. To compromise however I have been looking at a lot of tutorials on coding so by the time I'm done spriting I should be able to deliver something pretty above average I think. That's the goal, anyway.

Looking back at your question though, Apex will absolutely for sure be a 6-button layout.

Again, I'm not really sure what I want to do and I'm still thinking about it. I like the MvC air combo ideas with a CvS thing though. No promises.

Well, you could try downloading one of Ahuron's most recent characters. I suggest getting either Goh-un, World-Chang, or Ironfist Ryu. Those use the hitspark and super fx from KOF XIII.


If you want the raw images of the effects, i'm pretty sure Just no Point ripped them. You can find it in his website.

KoF XIII? Are you sure that would even go with this spriting style? I thought something cvs or infinite style would look better :P

I could be wrong though, so you should try them XIII effects (they're really good!)

I'm still a beginner coder, I'm not sure I can make a fancy config file. Maybe. No promises. I can get you a beta when it's ready though.

So I thought I had this cool idea for a gameplay mechanic, but I wanted to run it by a few guys before I started spriting around the mechanic.

What if when Apex dashed he was able to do special moves and chain hits coming out of the dash? I don't know if that was confusing or not but let me try explaining more into detail.
So here's the base I would use, [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
And during the dash (the blurry part) if you were to input something like D,DF,F P, you would do a special move instead of going to the last frame. With this you would be able to continue combos like LP,MP,HP, F+HP where the enemy would be out of reach at F+HP. You could launch them into the air, knock them down, etc with the specials.

I just thought it would be an interesting mechanic and be something different and fun. What do you guys think?

Being a bit more specific, once the changestate happens(the input during the dash) he should lose power right there. I question if his attacks should let him gain a small amount of power back if they connect...hmm.

So the move is going to be a stance type thing? I suggest checking out SFZ's Karin, Rikard's Slightly Pissed Off Ryu, and Rikard's Rikard for more ideas.
Also, I think using meter for the attack is stupid. Just make him so that if he gets hit, he'll go into a "tripped to lying down" state. If ever you add EX moves to the character, that's where he should lose meter, but the start-up time should be really fast.


Here's another idea for the move.
For the dash command, I suggest making it f,d,df and then give him a wave dash mechanic. See Tekken's Mishima characters for a good look.

- When punch is inputted, the attack's going to be a linear type attack. It'll be really fast and really powerful, but will have a hard time hitting mid-air characters.
- When kick is inputted, it'll be a short ranged high kick, but will most likely hit characters that are in mid-air. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]



I really like this idea, because it kinda replicates Tekken, and it adds more options to the character.
One last thing, I think you should post The Apex's back story. I'm sure not everybody here knows it. :)

So making the move spammable is fair? Honestly this would be the only move i'd use then.
He's already in a dash so he cant get hit UNTIL that second move happens (of course unless Pandas decides to let him get hit during the dash)
I also kinda disagree with going into a lie-down state. If the opponent already has a disadvantage with this move, when they do actually hit Apex, they should be allowed a few seconds to get some hits in, at least in an EX version.

Or maybe i'm imagining this move happening differently than you guys do, in which case nevermind.

Would this be fair? If during the blur anim Apex would be able to get hit, but it doesn't cost energy?
Or is it better that he can't get hit but it costs energy?

I think that's the question.

And the backstory goes like this, I'll give you the long one. My writing skills are pretty bad btw.

5 Robbers have a bank at gunpoint. They've secured the exits with explosives so no one gets out until they leave. 3 of them are taking and piling money into bags inside the safe of the bank. The other 2 keep their guns pointed at the crowd of people on the ground. Grant Uhlir has his hands on his head and lies right next to the door. He thinks of running outside the bank and yelling for help, but decides against it as it isn't worth being potentially blown to pieces. Anyway, the robbers aren't stealing his money. Their stealing his parents'. And that's okay.
One of the robbers holding the gun tell the other 3 to start finishing up. The second robber starts moving towards the door slowly until the other 4 arrive with the money. Guns aimed at the crowd they leave the building towards a van at the other side of the street. "Stay on the ground for 3 more minutes or the banks coming down!" one of the robbers yells as he leaves the door. Once they're all out and heading towards the van, one unsung hero (idiot), dashes outside and tries to get the money back. "I'll be hero-" he thinks as his body is incinerated by the explosion. A large ka-boom is felt around the area, and a large piece of debris impales young Grant Uhlir through the chest and another knocks his head hard.
Grant is rushed to a hospital, but the trauma from the explosion is almost too great. Through some miracle of god however he lasts long enough to make it to the operating table. The Doctors go to work, but the debris has left it's mark in the spinal cord and cerebellum. The debris has been embedded into Grant's body. The Doctors don't give up though. Little by little they remove the shards in his spine and brain. Finally they finish removing everything from the teenagers body.
Fast Forward 10 weeks.
Grant Uhlir's trauma from the explosion is still in effect, and the doctors had to replace the damaged parts of his body with artificial parts to fill in the gaps in the spine, but not the brain. They can't touch the brain. They still don't know how much damage it sustained from the blast.
Grant has been showing signs of waking up from the coma, but finally he awakes. He can't move, he doesn't know where he is. The last thing he remembers are the Nike sneakers of the man dashing towards the door trying to get his money back. The Nurses try to restrain him but it's of no use.

You see, the part of Grant's brain and spinal cord were struck in just the right positions so the brain and spine would be able to heal themselves up, but not completely. The part of the brain that limits the body so it doesn't hurt itself has been erased from Grant. A normal human can use 15% of the body, but Grant now is able to use his body to the full extent without limitations. His muscles can last longer and are stronger. His mind can process things quicker. He is faster than ever. These abilities of his come with a downside though. Because he no longer has the part of the brain that limits himself, he is now more subject to the feral instincts of any other predator animal. The longer he continues to use his body to it's fullest extent, the more he loses control until he is relying on pure instinct and rage. When he gets to this state he forgets all fighting technique and is more reminiscent to an angry predator (so his abilities are like a double-edged sword) . Once he stops fighting in this predator-animal state will he go back to normal, but forgetting everything he's done during the time.

Once Grant leaves the hospital he becomes aware of his abilities and dons a black hoodie, gray jeans, and Adidas sneakers from Target and becomes the Apex.

Meaning of Apex (taken from Wikipedia): Apex predators (also known as alpha, super, top or top-level predators) are predators with few to no predators of their own, residing at the top of their food chain.

The name Apex refers to Grant being the most advance human who has full control over his body, in contrast to all other people who don't and are regular. Also refers to the predatorial state he takes on when fighting for too long.

What do you guys think? I'm not good at writing well but hopefully this gives you enough of an idea of what he's like.

Here are ideas just in case the moves does become spammable.
1) Add long start-up.
2) Add a "Stamina System" wherein if the move is done for 3 or so consecutive times, Apex will go into a "tired" state.

And that back story is fucking great! Will he have a rival, or something? Maybe a pet dog?

I was thinking of some nemesis' or rivals', but wasn't going to act on them until the character is done. Pet dog, lol.
