What is Project EF-12?


Project EF-12 was a free 3D fighting game engine developed by Masahiro Onoguchi , which allows you to create 3D Fighters that closely resembles games like Virtua Fighter and Tekken.

Users can change many aspects of the title, from its characters, their abilities, appearances, stages and even stuff like the game's user interface.
If you so choose, you can implement new character models from scratch, and using someone else's modded fighters would be as simple as downloading and extracting some spreadsheet along with the files into a directory.

QuadArrow has announced on 2020/2/8 that EF-12 will not be supported anymore and a new software will be introduced in the future.

Opinion:
EF-12 did had potential but the reason of it's death its the lack of documentation in term of tutorials and complicated softwares which takes time for a person to learn and surprisingly some people are still using it to develop their own dream fighting game and some contacted me showcasing their projects like a fellow user named Anton Gracon who is working on his Ultraman fighting game and also was happy knowing that the files are still archived on my channel.

I had the time to take a look and download some deleted files that I would like to share with anyone who is interested for future use.

for example:
(A) I put "0xD0" which means ↓

Instruction:
Once you download and extracted your EF-12 folder "Version 1.65C or any other versions" follow these steps

1 -  open ef12_controller.ini

I remember doing an article on this software years ago on another forum but I never knew it had commercial use prior to its release to the public.
Do you have an information source/external website source with info on the 3 games jingi storm/force five/Yu Yu Hakusho Shitou Ankoku Bujutsukai that confirms they were made using EF-12?

These games were made before EF-12 have announced back in early 2000's as for the EF-12 engine it was released in 29 Jul, 2016.

The only way to find out is to ask the developers behind EF-12 "Quad Arrow" and he replies mostly on Twitter.

I will make a video comparison soon and ask the developer on twitter about it.

Yeah it had a little bit of hype around the end of 2013 in the mugen community.
It was originally announced on EventHubs in September of that year as I remember.

It just died because of several reasons.
there was No main support community (at least outside Japan as far as we know).
There was also a pile of better alternatives for 3D game development at the time
The lack of information and lack of resources & creators were all contributing factors, but there is a greater reason.

2013 was a year that saw a major shift in gaming culture.
2013 was the year when we really saw the end of the Console reign, and the rise of PC gaming.
2007-2010, as most will remember, was the age of recession, and the age of home-brew, emulators. 2008/09 was as some say "the mugen golden age"
and this time stretched through to 2012/early 2013.
But by 2013, better graphics hardware for PC, and more game ports started flowing through.
The return of the economy also saw more people starting to buy gaming rig PCs to start playing Triple A titles at higher quality and so on.
SO the attention in PC gaming shifted from poverty recession days of emulators, mugen and Home-brew gaming, to commercial high end gaming.

So that can explain why maybe it didn't take off - it is a similar situation with what has happened in mugen.
There are still people stuck on mugen 1.0 that never managed to transition since the 2013 gaming paradigm shift

homebrew 3d game engines that compete with bigger software like unreal and blender usually dont do well because its hard to compete.
also people can make money learning unreal and blender compared to these smaller less known ones

Wouldn't it be crazy to see perfectly remade tekken 1,2,3,4,5 characters and stuff fighting against soul calibur models.
God knows how long it would take to do that though XD

It would take a while to make the roster and to add the movesets on each character

It is a challenging task that my team are facing but they'll do their best to make it happen


as you can see the coder started to work on making Angel from Tekken Tag Tournament 2 skin into a playable character as an example

the thing we're facing is implementing her movesets from the original game to EF-12 and I believe there is a software that takes the original game's source code "lets say PCSX2 emulator" and apply it on the EF-12 skeleton.

the engine truly has potential and there are surprises that we'll soon going to announce for the Mugen Community

Perhaps, you could provide a little more information on who these people are,ie are they friends, YouTube you have met, people you are funding on commission, or what ever the arrangement just so that the community here can have a better understanding of your involvement with the EF-12 project. Otherwise someone will likely ask the silly question again and maybe misunderstand that it is a full-on crowd funded project with a website/discord etc etc, when in fact it may just be 2 or 3 strangers working alone haha. If that makes sense.

I'll try to clarify things more clearer let me give you guys a quick brief

I have a really wonderful team managed by two people Zin & Zero aka "The Mighty Ginkgo" my team is called "EF-12 RESTART"

we made an alliance where we do research and learn more about the potential of EF-12 as I encouraged them to make video tutorials on applying character models over an existing EF-12 base characters that the creator has provided and stage creation as well.

Also any discovery that they find out from this engine I request them to document it on YouTube so others can learn and benefit from the videos as well as gaining attraction so we all can have a big community for EF-12.

Exciting stuff will be announced soon by my team "EF-12 RESTART"

It's not hard to make this happen, like it's super easy to rig those models to the EF-12 skeleton, the problem Im having now is getting the animations to work properly. if we can get over that hump, extracting the animations from the game and applying them to the skeleton would be cake.

my problem with this engine is not the animation things like 3d models.
It is that we have still not seen quality fighting demonstration video in it history.
Gameplay is very important.
There will need to be some standard and playstyle coding to decide what is gameplay combo system
Like 8 way attack system soul calibur, or combo parry system
also all the video i ever see on youtube the fighter and camera move very weird and just lots of light punches.

I'm skeptical of it because for an engine to be good for making games the developers need to be active or it needs to be open source.
Also there needs to be more than just people with 3d modelling skills.
Hell, look at Ikemen.
They have 100s of people giving it bug feedback but even after many years it still is not perfect at playing mugen 1.1 content.
So imagine how many people you will need to iron all the problems out of a 3D engine with no active devs

I totally agree with SuperWhiskey it should be an open source and developer should be active since the engine is dead I'll try to contact with Quad Arrow if he's willing to share it as an open source.

Let's hope he shares it
